South Africa Mourns Miriam Makeba

Johannesburg, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) South Africa President Kgalema Motlanthe mourned the death of the nation’s musical mother singer Miriam Makeba, governmental sources reported Thursday.
Motlanthe highlighted in a document the contribution of Makeba to the fight against the regime of racial segregation in the continent through her music and her unshakeable commitment with the humanitarian issues.
"Her spirit will continue alive in the hearts of all and we will continue celebrating her person for the significant contribution to the formation of a better South Africa and world to live in", the President stated in the declaration.
The farewell ceremony will take place on Thursday, until funeral processions are held, and her body incinerated.
Official buildings and the South African embassies will be with the flag at half-mast, to honor the worldwide known as the mother of modern South Africa, "Mama Africa".
Makeba, 76, collapsed Sunday after a concert against racism in Italy. She later died of a heart attack in hospital, the news filled thousands of people everywhere of the planet with dismay.
The singer, legendary voice of the African continent and who gave voice to the anti-apartheid struggle, was also a Cuban citizen.
"Miriam Makeba used her voice, not merely to entertain, but to give a voice to the millions of oppressed South Africans under the yoke of apartheid".

"Miriam was an indefatigable African patriot who used her immense talent in the service of her people and the struggle for freedom and democracy not only in South Africa, but in the continent as a whole".
Fellow African musical giant Youssou Ndour mourned her death as a loss to the world's music.
"It really is a great loss for Africa, for African music and all music," he told a radio station. "She was somebody who did a lot for Africa, and in general for black people. It is a great loss."

Dj Amaza

Years in the industry: Eight years
Slots at Umhlobo Wenene: Friday and Saturday nights; “Weekend Night Fever” (10:00pm-01:00am) and Saturday mornings; “Local top 30” (10:00am-01:00pm)

Passion: Love for music and love for my people.

Likes: When I have made someone happy as I am always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need of it when able to do so.

Dislikes: I hate it when other people use others to get to the top and when others stand in the way of others success.

Word you hate the most: Is “can’t”, I strongly believe that it should be seen as an abbreviation for “can try” because people that use this word tend to stagnate and if there is still such individuals we will fail to grow as a nation.

What does radio mean to you: Radio presenting is not just a job, but my love for music was apparent from the age of nine; when other kids took their pocket money and bought playing cars, I saved mine and made a collection of music CDs.

What drives you: I’m driven by passion and dedication, so if one wants to have fun while learning a thing or two they must tune in between 10:00 and 01:00 weekends for the musical, vibrant, interactive and educational shows!

South African DJ Suspended After On-Air "Interview" With Jesus

Mail & Guardian Online is reporting the suspension of a South African presenter (DJ) for an on-air skit where he interviewed Jesus Christ.
Gareth Cliff was taken off the air for two days after numerous complaints from listeners of station
5fm.
According to its website, "5FM STEREO is a commercial and English-medium entertainment, music and information radio station targeted at an informed audience in the 16-34 ...[and] broadcasts 24-hours daily in the main urban areas of South Africa."
Cliff later apologized to listeners saying the "interview" was meant to be a parody of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of The Christ" and meant belittle any religion.
In the skit itself, Cliff played both interviewer and Jesus through a common recording technique used often in Radio.
Mail & Guardian Online quotes Nick Grubb, 5fm Programme Manager as saying, "We believe that the segment was inflammatory, and could have been interpreted negatively by a large portion of our listeners. Whilst Gareth is often irreverent and controversial, he merely overstepped the mark this time."

A wise mind is what’s needed in today’s world of music. It’s no longer a matter of how many hits one can possibly put together or how potentially you can become the next big thing. No, how the industry operates has changed all together, which can supposedly be blamed on how easy it has become for anyone to make music and release it independently. But wait… How many of you out there have that wise mind that can command you to implement good strategies for introducing your brand? One guy who has over the years managed to find means of introducing new names under his label is DJ Mbuso. Two years ago, the brother brought a concept album of two musical doctors; ‘House Prescription’ with Mbuso himself and the then unknown front man by the name of Dr. Duda. It was obvious to me that for Dr. Duda to penetrate the market heavily, he’d needed more than to just release a project with DJ Mbuso. With so many hits on the project, it emerged that Duda was actually not only talented behind the decks; he also had a sharp ear for music production.Once the first leg of ‘House Prescription’ was out and doing the rounds throughout the country - receiving massive airplay, Duda’s name started getting associated with other hits that were coming out from other house compilations. By then, his name was already familiar in the house music cycle. Even though I do not claim that he is the hottest DJ or producer at the moment, the strategies that Mbuso and his team have used to introduce Duda to the masses were really impressive. It’s been almost three years now since people got introduced to Duda’s name… After successfully jotting down a couple of songs on ‘House Prescription’ Vol. 1, the brother has now realised the ‘House Prescription’ concept fully and is pursuing it all by himself. And what one is hearing on this release sounds like another musical medical dose that might make house lovers OD.Even though the local house market is at the moment at its peak and there are just so many hits coming out every day, Dr. Duda’s offering is one that will hopefully accelerate more energy to the masses until the world crosses over to 2009. There are some well prepared doses on the project such as, ‘Duda’s World’, ‘Mpumalanga Swing’, ‘Pretoria Funk’, ‘Winter Nites’ and ‘Night Waves’. Marking the success of the Durban Sound, if you are going to release an album and don’t spice it up with a Durban feel, let it be said that you will not be entirely offering the sound that may push your success. Take it from guys like DJ Clock - new born in the house music that is already making noise. Also not to be counted out is Dr. Duda’s Durban Sound on the song, ‘U Yoshada Bani?’ It is clear to me that when it comes to Durbs sound, you can never go wrong bosswww!Though Duda was assisted by Mbuso to fully have his own piece of pie in the music game, it is impressing that the brother has also compiled songs made by up and coming producers. That’s a very good spirit to license songs from unknown artists because if we really want to make the local industry better, those already making it big should be willing to assist should they recognize talent.

Dj Pepsi

After being silent for quite sometime, Oskido’s younger brother, Nkululeko 'DJ Pepsi' Mdlongwa has done it again. Like his brother, the DJ has released a house installment, giving it the title, ‘Royal House Collection’. Hela, welcome to the Royal House Mense!
Even though the practice of licensing foreign house songs is still much alive locally, it is impressing that local house guns have seen the importance of including locally produced house tunes in their compilations. Like many other local DJs, Pepsi didn’t go wrong, together with the local underground house producer guru, Wandile ‘Master Wakes’ Zandeka, they have included a number of songs on this release. And guess what? One of the songs making noise at the moment is, ‘Pepsi’s Revenge’ [The Wakes Mix]. The tune has been doing the rounds on radios and you know moss, once the commercial radio stations start pumping a particular song, the rest is bound to follow.
With the cost of living gone mad, of people have become quite selective when it comes to the music they want to buy. And the same goes with recording labels who no longer sign artists that have not made a name for themselves. It is no surprise to me that Pepsi is one of the lucky few who Universal Music have chosen to invest in. A bonus is that Pepsi comes from the Mdlongwa family which includes the big dog Oskido and the up and coming and very promising young blood, Bobstar.
Apart from the local tunes that Pepsi has had a hand in, the project also features songs made by other music maestros from different parts of the land. The album features thirteen songs which vary from commercial to soulful deep tunes. There are some really killer vocal songs like, ‘Love Forever More, Amen’ that flows well through the veins. There is also one chilled tune that is promising to make some noise titled, ‘Medusa’.
As for this album’s sleeve, well, what can brother Phash says? Like I always preach, how the sleeve looks says a lot about what the album has to offer. This boils down to taking every single aspect of the project seriously. So they say, before you expect anyone to take you seriously, you gotta ensure that you are serious with yourself first. And in regard to this, brother Pepsi has done his best to make sure that everything is in order before this project could be released. Good one

Dj China

As some of you might know, Mbuso parted ways with SoulCandi and has established his own independent label, Phezulu Records. Starting afresh, House Kollectives mixed by DJ China is the first installment coming out of this independent label. Being so in touch with all the work that Mbuso has done in the past, my anticipation was overwhelming and I was convinced that this album was going to be the real Phezulu representative. But some of the songs proved to be otherwise! The first track, Double Trouble done by Bongani and Xolani Msongani is for me another re-produced Revolution song, The Anthem. Putting these two tracks on the play, I realized that both songs sound the same. The difference will be of course that the twins' song – ‘The Anthem' was released in 2004 and ‘Double Trouble' this year. As a result of this, I am disappointed that an independent label lead by Mbuso could simply allow itself to be associated with copycat songs. I don't know if it is a remix or new version of the old Zulu song ‘Bayethe' but nevertheless, the song was not done right. Again, ‘Rhythmic Motions' is another track that lacks the real feel, but what seems to be another problem in this song is the usage of the wrong instruments.Starting with ‘Pearl-Blackwhole' – track seven on the album, the producer did some real magic. As soon as the track opens, you can tell that it is one of those mellow songs that flows on the river banks. With the aggressive bassline, soft keyboards and percussion – this song is a good remedy for party goers! Ayoooo! Ong'ketsang… ‘Feelings' by Terrance Mathe promises to dis-prove those who undermine locally produced house. Though there's nothing much happening on the track, the very few instruments on play are solid. Again, I find this song unique because the producer played around with the beats in a very interesting style. Coming up with fire! ‘Dancing in China ' produced by Kentphonik, is a hit and is going to shine! Honestly I'm beginning to feel the presence of the Kenphonik team. The three boys are not making Mickey Mouse music and they seem to be on a mission to rule the local house scene. Hier die mense are just on the right track and I can tell that they're aiming high! With thirteen tracks, this release has nice and bad songs… Who knows, it might do well in the market.

Another on From Durban

Another one from the Durban trio, Big Nuz! I remembered the time I reviewed their first release, ‘Zozo’ sometime in 2006, their music was sounding ok. Even though their first release didn’t get much publicity, the guys didn’t gave up, instead they teamed up with one of Durban’s music soldier’s on the forefront, Tira and recorded a hot follow up project, ‘2nd Round Knockout’.
‘2nd Round Knockout’ is something that the group should be proud of. From the sleeve design to the sound quality of the songs, everything is on point! It’s exciting to see Big Nuz fully unleashing their musical dragons and working very hard to perfect their sound. Judging from their previous release, allow me to say that the group has grown musically.
I am not surprised that Tira saw the need to work with Big Nuz, I mean with the talent they have, it didn’t require a genius to notice their bright future. Tira and his team are honestly making noise through-out the country so that every SA urban music supporter can get to know what the trio is capable of.
Like any DKM release, Big Nuz brings heavy house beats mixed with the kind of kwaito flow to sing along to. Climbing the ladder, even though it is taking a little longer for the group to get known, there is one, two or three songs on their project that you might have heard blasting on radio, TV or at an event. Some of the songs that are really cracking are, ‘Ubala’, ‘Ugesi’ and ‘Uyoyisholo wena’.
I personally think for any up and coming artist, there are one or two things that you can learn from Big Nuz’s musical journey thus far. From their humble beginnings, the guys released their first project and even though the album didn’t get much in return, the guys didn’t give up. They continued linking themselves with those who could assist them, regardless of the how long it took, and two years down the line, Tira gave them a killer platform.
One thing for sure, Durban guys have locked their market, capitalized on it and continue to give the fans what they want! Nice one Big Nuz and your executive producer, Tira… What is happening lately is nothing short of a kwaito revolution.

DJ Clock: The First Tick

Its amazing how creativity is perceived in the music world, one man’s cream could be another man’s trash. That’s exactly what I thought as I settled to review this album, ‘The first tick’ by DJ Clock. Forgive me if you disagree, but I think his first ‘tick’ is a very positive step into his career.
Clock’s debut album appears a bit lukewarm and an ordinary type of project, but it has undoubtedly put his footprints on the local music landscape. His touch in music production carries all it takes to worry other house producers and perhaps even give them a few sleepless nights.
The young man’s breakthrough should be an inspiration to other potential music producers who are working hard towards hitting the spot. DJ Clock says he self-taught himself every studio recipe he knows. After achieving very little at school, he decided to follow up on his studio dream and when he saw the space, he squeezed in with a 14 track house album that could leave you gasping for more.
I must say my first experience with DJ Clock’s music wasn’t that moving at all, I used to see the young man at gigs around the country but I have always waited anxiously to grab a studio addition of his work.
One track that stands a great chance of blowing away house fans is loaded on the second slot of the project and is titled ‘umahamba yedwa’. Carrying with it, some unusual elements in the genre of house music, the track goes further than just snatching up the temperature of the offering. With its crispy hi-hats, pumping bass lines and seductive strings, you would think it’s a rave jam until a few seconds later when the song suddenly changes down into ‘house’ gear.
I have always had a harsh opinion when it comes to renditions but I think this time I can be justified for damning Clock’s rendition of Mika’s “Relax, Take it easy”. The idea of doing one should be to make it better than the original track or at least different. Failure to do that will just attach some clumsy elements to the project and give critics much room to hit hard on you.
But overall, its a rocking album that is worth a grab to any music fan.

Going Beyond for literacy

Friday dawned and finally “Rally to read” was here. I had great expectations and nothing I imagined could prepare me for the journey we were about to undertake. Everything went according to plan from start to finish- our winners Sharon Vilakazi and Harry Letshoene arrived with their groups on time, the latest Land Rover Freelanders that would carry us arrived and we set off for Pietermaritzburg. We were a group of 20 people about to share in a unique experience, the impact of which we can only describe to other people.

After a brief overnight rest in Pietermaritzburg, we had an early 6 o’clock departure time on Saturday morning to King Grant Retreat in Ixopo which was the meeting place for all the rally participants. There were about 50 cars split into 7 groups ready to set off in different directions to distribute books and educational materials to 2 or 3 schools each. The first school was Kwasikhunyana Primary in the High flats area. We were greeted by singing, ululating and praise for coming there. The situation was really desperate with the school only having 3 meager classrooms to teach grades 1 to 7. There were broken desks, the walls were bare, just not enough of anything. The school has a pre-paid electricity box with no running toilets and no where for the children to play. It was the first time that the rally was visiting this school so it will be in the programme for 2 more years. Some of us were brought to tears and started thinking about how ungrateful we’ve been at times and complacent about doing for others who have less than us.

After a 2hr visit we left, setting off on a scenic winding drive to Kokstad to visit our second school, St Paul Primary which is in its second year with the rally. Our spirits were lifted because we saw what a committed leader-the school’s principal- could achieve with right sort of assistance. The classrooms were filled with colour and a documentation of the children’s encounters with words and books in their mother tongue and English. The children had prepared books that they wanted to read to us and what a joyous moment is was for us all. They read with pride and confidence.

The third and final school for the day was a farm school called Ntambanane Primary which was also in its second year with the rally. Unlike at the other schools where there were only mothers at this school here fathers were present. One father spoke about the progress that his child has made since the involvement of rally to read at their school. He talked about how he could not read his entire life and now he is learning too because his child gets taught at school and comes home to teach him.Almost everyone in our group talked about how moved they were and committed themselves to helping others who have less. Its easy to get caught up in your own problems, in your own life and forget about uplifting fellow human beings. We are all connected and the suffering of one does not go unfelt.I hope to do more for others. I hope to go on more rallies. I wish to see more rallies. Rallies for literacy, for food, for clothes, for skills exchange. More Rallies!

Thank you Land Rover and Rally to Read. What an uplifting, life-changing, inspiring experience.

Criminals are NOT COOL so why lie about doing time? He may not have done the crime but according to SUNDAY WORLD, Mandoza thinks he’s much more marketable if he has a past behind bars! He has often told newspapers, SABC TV channels and radio stations that he was arrested for car theft and incarcerated for one- and-a-half years at Diepkloof prison (Sun City) in Jozi. He’s also said he was a rehabilitated ex-convict and had abandoned his sordid past. But SUNDAY WORLD has revealed that Mandoza didn’t spend any time in that cross-bar hotel – or any other, for that matter. The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that Mandoza, born Mduduzi Tshabalala (born on January 7 1978), is not listed in their system.Mandoza’s confession was all just hype to generate more publicity for his macho-man image, something that American gangsters such as DMX and Akon have also done unsuccessfully! But this story doesn’t end here. Mandoza may be closer to experiencing life behind bars sooner than he thinks if the award-winning muso is charged and convicted of reckless and negligent driving after an accident that left two young people dead.

Singer sees more moola in her back pocket

Dancing queen Chomee has sealed a deal with Kwaito king and 999 Music boss Arthur Mafokate where she was allegedly offered 14% royalties of her forthcoming albums. 999 Music’s cashcow was initially offered 10% royalties but she rejected the contract. Though neither Mafokate nor Chomee could be drawn into revealing the details, SUNDAY WORLD has it on good authority that Vuvuzela, as Arthur is known in the music industry, has acceded to her demand. The singer is happy with the deal and plans to release a flagship song titled Siyophelelaphi with Queen of Bling Khanyisile Mbau. The duo also collaborated on Mtororo (cool in township slang).

The winners in the Non-Broadcast Categories are...

Friday the 2nd of May at the 14th Annual MTN SA Music Awards was an occasion for invited guests and nominees in the Non-Broadcast categories to get together and celebrate the depth and diversity of local musical talent. Held in Sun City, it was an evening filled with vibrant performances, surprise winners and musical accolades. And as much as there was an incredible variety of music being recognised, there was a shared feeling that Mzansi’s musicians are creating world-class, original music, regardless of genre or style.
The evening kicked off with cocktails before guests were ushered into the ballroom for the awards ceremony. The awards were hosted by comedian, TV and radio personality Trevor Noah. Flautist Wouter Kellerman set the tone with a mesmerising performance. Then it was time to end the suspense and name some winners. A host of music industry players were recognised, from engineers and producers to a broad range of artists. Jeff Maluleke played an unplugged jazzy set in the middle of proceedings before Loyiso closed the affair with a powerful medley of his own music. But it didn’t end there. Guests were invited up to the Palace of the Lost City where they could attend one of four spectacular Star Parties, each featuring a different SAMA 14 nominee. Attendees could choose to party the night away to either Jimmy Dludlu, Camagwini, Flat Stanley or Slikour.

Doctors are unable to confirm whether the tumour is malignant or benign at this stage. The singer is said to be undergoing radiation treatment at the moment. Gunman brings his Yizo Yizo role into real life

This should be the happiest time for new parents Jabu Christopher Kubheka and Sithandwa Mtetwa, but the Yizo Yizo actor is trying to pull a fast one and get out of being responsible for his five-month-old baby! The actor, who plays Gunman in the popular Yizo Yizo series has been dating Mtetwa since 1997. Mtetwa told DJ ABO that when she announced they were pregnant, Kubheka gave her R400 to terminate the pregnancy. Being a Christian, Mtetw refused to abort her child and has since given birth to a healthy baby but she wants the Phuliqolo musician to take responsibility for his role in the situation.“I don’t want his money. I have a steady job and can take care of the baby on my own,” she insists. “He’s a pig who left me with just the bacon.”The TV actor and musician is not denying anything but has said that he will speak to Mtetwa privately to figure out how best the matter can be resolved. Brenda Fassie's son mesmerizes Malawians

Until when he apppeared on the stage for all the eyes to see, donning a T-shirt inscribed Ama, Kip Kip, nobody predicted that Bongani Fassie was the very son to the late South African prima donna Brenda who died in 2004.Bongani leading a group called Jozi stepped in with fellow popular South African Kwaito star in the name Ishmael of Avulekile fame and ruptured into fire the moment they touched the naked microphone to dish out the best of the rest.Brenda once appeared in Malawi in the 90's and her son's first appearance in Blantyre was an inspiration to all orphans as well as a great honour to the Mutharika family. It spoke volumes of his intimate feelings about death and orphanage when he consistently pointed on the words inscribed on his T-shirt in reference to her late mother's identities.Like mother like son, Bongani expressed himself better in his dancing antics when he wriggled his body as if he had forgotten his bones back in South Africa.

He was not a disappointment when he exited the stage with his mother's popular Vulindlela song while promising to come back. Vulindlela managed to rip through the patronage with wildest sing along as if it was Brenda herself doing it.In his speech at the intermittence of the songs Bongani urged people especially the youths to be united against pangs of orphanage which have muzzled the Africa region and turned it into a place of crisis."We thank organizers of the show for making it possible for us to interact in this big way, and our message is that of unity, we arerepresenting the whole of Johannesburg, South Africa," he said.
"We are 100 percent dancers, we express ourselves through the music we play and our dreams are to see the reduction in the problems which come due to orphanage in African community," said Bongani.Such was an event where 12 Television cameras flew around pointing at one spot, attracting Dstv's Channel O crew. Then came Kenyan Nameless who stole Malawi thunder, thudding like a bombclat.

DJ Cleo also confirms he has rekindled his relationship with Khumalo and says getting back with her is the best thing he could have done, “It’s better than winning awards”, he enthused. Thapelo Mokoena: The Bodyguard I want to Guard!

I did not meet Thapelo Mokoena to check out how smooth his face is, how sexy his laugh is nor to hear how captivating his voice is but how could I not have noticed when all that stood between us was a tiny table that was not even big enough to accommodate his bottle of Heineken and my glass of water? Let’s be real now, the man is an actor and for all I know he could have been acting throughout the interview to make me believe he’s the best thing to ever hit mother earth and you know what? I damn well fell for it. Like every second actor in South Africa, Thapelo is a former Generations actor. He was the host for our first ever edition of Fear Factor SA and he thereafter stepped in to fill Fezile Mpela’s size 14 boots in the local drama series, Mzansi. Did I mention Fezile was in Generations too?? I caught up with the Ladysmith born actor in Melrose Arch and the one thing that stood out from our chat is that he is very happy with the way his career has played out so far. He is more than moketa ola wa (skinny) bodyguard who kissed Karabo and he is certainly more than your average actor.

Bleksem, the new Kwaito prodigy of Will Of Steel Productions will get unmasked in April, when his album, Skepsel, gets released. Having already been introduced to the market through his single “Do It” which came out in 2007, Bleksem went on to collaborate with Brickz on his hit song “Left Right”, as well as Slikour on “Umsindo”.

Most significantly, Bleksem is the voice behind the biggest song of 2007, “Wena Ng’hamba Nawe”, produced by DJ Cleo off the album Eskhaleni Phase 4. There is no doubt that his infectious chorus and the lyrics with which he romanticizes the female listener is what made the song as big as it became. Here’s a new artist who came into the game with understanding what it is that the audience wants, and has delivered with aplomb.Bleksem will become a phenomenon in the South African music industry, no doubt, and he has been careful to be patient and pace himself as a Will Of Steel understudy since 2004.When asked about why he has been masked all along and who the person under the balaclava is, Bleksem responds: “How else must I hide my face? Should I have worn a bike helmet instead? Jokes aside, I am weary of the industry sabotage that my mentor DJ Cleo was recently subjected to. I am afraid that even before I become a household name, jealous people could try to sidetrack my career by virtue of my association with the successful Will Of Steel Productions.”Bleksem further goes on to say: “I am very excited about my album and feel privileged to be working with the main man himself, DJ Cleo. There are very few people who get this chance, and some have wasted it when they had it, but I am determined to make it big. There is a place for a Kwaito emperor and I have come to claim it. 2008 is my year to be great!”So look out for it, Bleksem’s new album called Skepsel, out in April 2008.

Will of Steel Productions

Started in Johannesbeburg in 2002, WOS, has fast become one of southern Africa's brightest and hottest labels. Lead by the dynamic DJ talent of Cleopas "DJ Cleo Monyepao, WOS is now home to a selection of SA's finest new talent.DJ Cleo, who hails from Gauteng's East Rand, began his musical career at the tender age of ten. Having Marabi styles close to his heart, and being a bass player, Cleo sought out programming and engineering skills, even doing a stint at Allenby Campus on sound engineering, as he pursued a new concept in musicianship, that being the marriage of musical instrumental skills, programming skills and engineering skills. A fortunate meeting with Ashifa Shabba, afforded him the opportunity to work in radio at Y FM. Cleo found producing for radio a natural extension of himself, and soon was exploring the producing full music for both himself and others. Cleo's debut recording was "Will of Steel which featured on the DJ Glen Lewis/DJ Fresh's "Gatecrasher double CD compilation. The release was in real terms a great success for Cleo, and genuinely a portent of things to come, as soon he was producing and composing more and more music for more and more people. In fact whilst it would be a while before DJ Cleo would see his own debut album released, the proceeds from "Will of Steel provided the wherewithal to start Will of Steel Productions (PTY) Ltd, his wholly owned label, production house and publisher, and many hits were first to follow. In 2003, the first of string of other artist releases, with Cleo's compositions and production abilities in full force, hit the market. Mzekezeke (first 2 releases) and Brown Dash (Puff and Pass) might arguably not have achieved the heights they have without the extraordinary production and songwriting input from Cleo. Not content to sit back, WOS began to sign it's own artists in 2004, starting with Pitch Black Afro, where he produced and composed the classic "Matofotofo", and then "Brickz in 2005, releasing another smash album, with another equally classic track "Sweety my baby".In 2004, in between Pitch Black Afro and Brickz, Cleo released his debut solo album as DJ Cleo, which was critically acclaimed, and to a certain extent was a compilation of his work to date. He then followed in 2005, with undoubtedly Will of Steels biggest seller to date, his second solo release "Eskhaleni Ext 2". One innovation that this release brought to the SA (and world) market was the creative approach linking opera and kwaito - with "Goodbye being the result. Many of SA's biggest contemporary artists and projects have sought out the outstanding producing and composing skills that Cleo brings to the table, Mandoza, Kabelo, Doc Shebeleza and the Coca Cola Popstars project are amongst a few. This company certainly has the Will Of Steel and is growing to be South Africa's most sout after production stable as new Artists are being signed every year.Tel: +27 11 484 7263

Kabelo Mabalane

South African kwaito star Kabelo Mabalane, better known as Buza Luv, says he is also in love with Jesus.
Speaking at a one-day church camp in Lobatse this weekend, Mabalane said turning to Jesus only changed his character and not his personality. He said he knows a lot of gospel singers who are not religious or born again.
The theme for the camp was 'young people taking the centre stage of transformation.'
Asked by one of the participants what music meant to him, Mabalane said music is all about having fun.
He said he used to enjoy having many girlfriends, driving expensive cars and showboating before turning to God. Mabalane said despite the seemingly flamboyant lifestyle, he used to feel a void in his heart that only became filled by turning to Jesus.

Euphonik – This is how the future sounds! Every 5-10 years, every industry has that one person that revolutionizes things within that particular industry. Euphonik is gonna revolutionize things over the next five years. He’s elevating the game. If you don’t believe me, call me in five years” - DJ Fresh. He’s a dynamo of energy, skill, passion and intelligent ambition - every attribute of a successful DJ and producer, he exudes in a second. If you’re wondering why Themba Mbongeni Nkosi chose Euphonik as a stage name, just watch one of his sets and you’ll be amazed. This guy is about way more than creating pleasing sounds. “I believe that in order to stay relevant as a DJ, you constantly need to keep up to speed with what’s going on in the industry, know your competition, research your music and always try to have your finger on the pulse of what the crowd wants.” Euphonik started DJing at house parties alongside his good friend, Naked DJ who is making a splash of his own in the music world. Naked can be heard spinning the tunes on Bad Boy T’s show on Metro fm. He says, “Not only is Euphonik the future of house music, he works as hard with the ladies too, that’s why he’s one of the sexiest men in the world!” Besides their obvious talent on the decks, they both shared a love of hip hop beats but Euphonik’s first love was definitely house and dance music. From the moment he heard Fresh House Flava Vol. 1, he knew he was destined to be a DJ. Euphonik is currently enjoying the best of being a DJ across all spectrums: he’s become a household name in Jozi’s clubbing circles and he’s also a regular feature on Dj Fresh’s, Fresh Drive on 5fm. “Euphonik is a super-cool-house-cat. He has an interesting groove and is another one of SA's up and coming music stars. Keep an eye on this boy!” says Roger Goode from 5fm. Big corporates like MTN, Smirnoff and Vodacom have also entrusted him with their brand parties and Euphonik has been chosen to open for major artists like Missy Elliott, Blu Cantrell, Mzekezeke and Zola. Proof that he has a good ear not only for choosing tracks that’ll get people grooving on dance floors but for spotting new talent as well, is his job as an A&R person for Soulcandi. Euphonik has worked with HHP, Slikour and Flabba, to name a few – mixing their hip hop sounds to excellence. His expertise in production and sourcing tracks combined with his DJ skills has molded Euphonik into a force to be reckoned with in the SA music industry. With a rock-solid reputation, rapidly growing fan base and an incredible amount of experience, skill and innovation, Euphonik (only in his early twenties) is leading the way for a new generation of South African DJs.

Sunday World has it on good authority that the former lovebirds are now on speaking terms. Sesoko is the mother of Mafokate’s daughter, Owami. Sesoko confirmed on Friday that she and her former beau have made friends. She says: “I am happy that we’ve finally resolved our differences. We now talk almost daily about our daughter and her progress. “The fact that Arthur has poured his heart out and we have started afresh means a lot to me. I now understand what he went through. “I hope that Owami will soon be visiting me frequently.” Sesoko says she is tired of the negative coverage that she has been receiving in the media. “The media has portrayed me as a bad and irresponsible mother. “My daughter is growing up and people will tell her those things. ” Sesoko also revealed that she is releasing her new album, Sweet Little Things, with a new record company. What’s that smell? - DJ Cleo ‘flipped his wig’ at scent of his protege

No-nonsense producer DJ Cleo has fired his recalcitrant protegé Mavo for stealing his luxury perfume. News of Mavo’s dismissal from DJ Cleo’s Will of Steel Productions company came to light after it was announced on the SABC1 music show Live last Friday that Mavo had joined Chicco Twala’s stable. It is alleged that Mavo sneaked into Cleo’s bathroom in his Welgehuewel house west of Jozi, bathed and helped himself to his luxury perfume. It is believed that on smelling his perfume on the muso, Cleo flipped his wig and confronted him about it. Mavo rattled Cleo’s cage when he crocheted a story that he wore the perfume to ward off the pong he had on him after picking up bricks scattered in the yard of the wizard vinyl spinner. “This angered DJ Cleo because at that time there were no bricks in his yard and apart from that, Mavo had no right to sneak into Cleo's bedroom and help himself to his stuff. “DJ Cleo has a wife and children. What if Mavo had found Cleo’s wife bathing in the buff?” asks a source. Cleo will not deny or confirm the perfume incident. “No comment on that one,” he said when quizzed by Sunday World. But the award-winning producer confirms – refering to a story published in our newspaper about his dog being raped – that he fired Mavo for, among other things, spreading lies about his company. “The aim is not to discredit him, but Will of Steel Productions is a reputable company. We have a code of conduct which he violated,” Cleo says. Mavo confirms that he had a tiff with Cleo over the perfume. “I was sweating after picking up the bricks which were scattered in his yard. “I then went to his bathroom, bathed and used his perfume. He then got angry. But that was not the only reason we drifted apart. He had problems with my work ethics and fired me,” says Mavo.

Rihanna’s nipples get plastered

Rihanna’s nipples get plastered
It’s a cover-up
Umbrella singer, Rihanna, says she loves plasters.
Not only do they cover up nail mishaps and ease the pain of shoe blisters but she also has a more efficient use for them. She says a wardrobe malfunction is not laughing matter when you're striding down the red carpet for all the world to see. How many times have we seen that happen? To avoid any unintentional flashing, Rihanna sticks plasters over her nipples. Rihanna obviously doesn’t like the world press getting a boobie-shot. Good for her, nice that we have a respectable star for kids to look up to.

Man claims Generations

Celebrity News
It’s a girl!

07 April : Man claims Generations star is his love-child
A 60 year old man from Potchefstroom is claiming to be Connie Masilo-Ferguson's father. The old-timer, George Molahlegi Tau, who is a musical composer says that he was quite the “love rat” when he was a teen. He went into exile a while ago but returned in 1991 only to discover from his “sympathisers” that he had fathered the famous face. Tau is demanding a paternity test from Ferguson: “All I want is a paternity test to be done so I can move on with my life,” he says. The Generations star is all too familiar with strangers claiming she is their birthright. The actress encountered a similar situation a few years. Ferguson had a young man turn up on the SABC’s front door claiming to be her son. Ferguson is refusing the paternity test, just as she denied the motherhood claims from the young Rustenburg man.“I was born in Kimberley and my parents are in Botswana. If I were to take these people seriously I’d end up mad.” Says the actress.

UKZN PMB students to protest

At least three protesting students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Pietermaritzburg campus were wounded by police firing rubber bullets on Tuesday, the students' representative council (SRC) said.Police spokesperson Inspector Joey Jeevan said officers used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd at 10am. "We have not yet confirmed how many were struck by the bullets, but no one was hospitalised," she said.Police arrested 18 students for participating in an unlawful gathering and for disrupting traffic flow on Alan Paton Road. The institution's SRC president, Mabandla Ndlangamandla, said three students were struck by rubber bullets without any warning shots having been fired.Hundreds of students began protesting on Monday over issues including racism, accommodation and assaults by police on students living in residences. Nd
langamandla said students also had concerns relating to two senior lecturers accused of ignoring student issues.A memorandum detailing students' concerns was handed to the university's management on Monday.Reports that lectures had been postponed indefinitely could not be confirmed. Ndlangamandla said that certain lectures were still continuing. "The campus has not been completely shut down," he said. The SRC met the university management on Monday evening but no agreement was reached."We don't know when we will meet with them again because right now we are working on getting our comrades out of jail," Ndlangamandla said. He also disputed police reports that the protest was an "unlawful gathering".

Ntsiki Mazwai’s MaMiya

Ntsiki Mazwai’s debut MaMiya is a much anticipated release that has been preceded by the hype surrounding her single, Uwrongo; the highly acclaimed spoken word track was featured on DJ Fresh’s Definition of House Vol. II.
Mazwai’s debut is riding high on the heart-skipping success of Uwrongo and will do much to strengthen her profile as a poet and musician. Her brand of floetry is exotic and not entirely unappealing, with its mellowed vibe and subtle expression.
Strong drum beats and jazzy rhythms accompany Mazwai’s natural and almost raw talent, giving the project an earthy, African feel to it. Delivered in the typically understated and somewhat expressionless manner associated with this particular genre, the overall lyrical content seems to possess a ‘deeper meaning’ than what it actually does, coming across as sombre and overly mature yet surprisingly unpretentious.
For with 16 tracks to take your pick from, one would think socially conscious topics have free reign alongside equally playful elements but not so on MaMiya. Once again, love provides the basis for much of the material on this album and to be honest, there is only so much emotion one can handle.
Why so dark and heavy, the girl? With a sun kissed voice like yours, you ought to be playing in the light a bit more. Fault does not lie with this artist’s enigmatic appeal or her incredible talent but with a debut that takes itself far too seriously.
Capable of delivering so much more than words that merely rhyme, Ntsiki Mazwai has the potential to work the South African floetry genre to a heady state of popularity. It is only but a matter of time.

From Definition of house to definition of Love

DJ Fresh comes to the UK, to grace Se-one with his unique blend filllled with Soul and Depth, fusing the percussive tech edge, so evident in his productions. Be ready to be entertained in a no compromise musical environment delivering only quality music. DJ Fresh doesn't mince his words - DJ Fresh's description of himself is "a young person on a mission to change the world, one person at a time, and not doing badly so far". Big Dawg has over 15 house albums under his belt. He has shared the DJ booth with a number of internationals, including “Little Louie” Vega, Frankie Knuckles, Armand Van Helden, Jazzy Jeff, Hoxton Whores, Terry Hunter and Dominic Spreadlove, and played in Southport in 2000 and at the legendary Pacha in Ibiza in 2001, 2005 & 2007. Earlier in 2002, Fresh was among a team of South African DJs who performed at the Masters At Work party at the Miami Winter Music Conference.
Splintering noise is going to be the name of the game here, with the big Dawg doing what he does best with some titanic offerings in the field of dance floor focused dance/house music. Supporting DJ Fresh on the London Night of vibrant intensity is three UK based DJ’s Selekta (Slickmanagent), Phenyo(Slickmanagent/Push FM) and DJ Bongz (swing entertainment) – three guys who have tore clubland with their ear shattering assaults on the origin of aural House and dance music. HAH! The UK’s local DJ’s will be tested against the flawless mixing skills of the Big Dawg himself.Well, while the actual Valentines Day will have come and gone, things would have only just begun. On Saturday 16 Feb, Fresh will be supported by Northern UK based DJ Lewishaka, who I have witnessed opening the night for South African based DJ Euphonik at some past gig. It is quite evident that the UK addicted to DJ Fresh or maybe DJ fresh is addicted to the UK…..With these words said; I think I’m safe to say….. Until we meet again! CHEERS!And what a voluptuous, vivacious Valentines spectacular it promises to be!!
