As 2009 kicks in, the urban house music scene continues to shine. What is so unique about this spotlight is that the genre is not only doing well locally, the consumers from other African countries, as well as overseas, have also begun to praise South African music.In the fast lane is the fresh hit jam, ‘Money Maker' from the independent label, Ziyawamo Productions, produced by DJ Bobo and DJ Menace featuring Smallz.After Ziyawamo House Selections Volume 1 got released late last year, it fast became one of the most popular local house projects. Soon after that, Ziwayamo started getting support for their project from supporters abroad. "When we did the song, we meant it for anyone who is working hard to earn a living and all we are saying is, after all the hard work, you need to celebrate your money."Asked how the hit song has been received abroad given that the lyrics are in vernacular, he said the lyrics are written and sung in Zulu, which most of the neighbouring countries understand. "When we toured all the neighbouring countries in festive, people easily relate to the lyrics and would sing along."After having extensively toured South Africa and other neighbouring countries, Ziyawamo Productions now goes after the European market. According to Kuse, the video for the hit song, ‘Money Maker' got picked up on youtube by a Europe promoter. The interested promoter then got in touch with the local independent label about the song. "They asked us to translate the lyrics for them so as to fully understand what the song is all about." Ziyawamo head said after that, the promoter then contacted them again informing the label that they had been testing ‘Money Maker' at various venues and it seemed to be working.It was early this year when Kuse received an invitation from the promoter for performances in Europe this April. For Kuse, getting bookings from foreign countries shows that local house is a revolutionary stage and the world is starting to fully accommodate local music. "We have gone beyond the boarders and it is very exciting that we are now competing on a global scale and the world is interested in our music," he concludes." Going Beyond for literacy

Friday dawned and finally “Rally to read” was here. I had great expectations and nothing I imagined could prepare me for the journey we were about to undertake. Everything went according to plan from start to finish- our winners Sharon Vilakazi and Harry Letshoene arrived with their groups on time, the latest Land Rover Freelanders that would carry us arrived and we set off for Pietermaritzburg. We were a group of 20 people about to share in a unique experience, the impact of which we can only describe to other people.

After a brief overnight rest in Pietermaritzburg, we had an early 6 o’clock departure time on Saturday morning to King Grant Retreat in Ixopo which was the meeting place for all the rally participants. There were about 50 cars split into 7 groups ready to set off in different directions to distribute books and educational materials to 2 or 3 schools each. The first school was Kwasikhunyana Primary in the High flats area. We were greeted by singing, ululating and praise for coming there. The situation was really desperate with the school only having 3 meager classrooms to teach grades 1 to 7. There were broken desks, the walls were bare, just not enough of anything. The school has a pre-paid electricity box with no running toilets and no where for the children to play. It was the first time that the rally was visiting this school so it will be in the programme for 2 more years. Some of us were brought to tears and started thinking about how ungrateful we’ve been at times and complacent about doing for others who have less than us.

After a 2hr visit we left, setting off on a scenic winding drive to Kokstad to visit our second school, St Paul Primary which is in its second year with the rally. Our spirits were lifted because we saw what a committed leader-the school’s principal- could achieve with right sort of assistance. The classrooms were filled with colour and a documentation of the children’s encounters with words and books in their mother tongue and English. The children had prepared books that they wanted to read to us and what a joyous moment is was for us all. They read with pride and confidence.

The third and final school for the day was a farm school called Ntambanane Primary which was also in its second year with the rally. Unlike at the other schools where there were only mothers at this school here fathers were present. One father spoke about the progress that his child has made since the involvement of rally to read at their school. He talked about how he could not read his entire life and now he is learning too because his child gets taught at school and comes home to teach him.Almost everyone in our group talked about how moved they were and committed themselves to helping others who have less. Its easy to get caught up in your own problems, in your own life and forget about uplifting fellow human beings. We are all connected and the suffering of one does not go unfelt.I hope to do more for others. I hope to go on more rallies. I wish to see more rallies. Rallies for literacy, for food, for clothes, for skills exchange. More Rallies!

Gunman brings his Yizo Yizo role into real life

This should be the happiest time for new parents Jabu Christopher Kubheka and Sithandwa Mtetwa, but the Yizo Yizo actor is trying to pull a fast one and get out of being responsible for his five-month-old baby!The actor, who plays Gunman in the popular Yizo Yizo series has been dating Mtetwa since 1997. Mtetwa told DJ ABO that when she announced they were pregnant, Kubheka gave her R400 to terminate the pregnancy. Being a Christian, Mtetw refused to abort her child and has since given birth to a healthy baby but she wants the Phuliqolo musician to take responsibility for his role in the situation.“I don’t want his money. I have a steady job and can take care of the baby on my own,” she insists. “He’s a pig who left me with just the bacon.”The TV actor and musician is not denying anything but has said that he will speak to Mtetwa privately to figure out how best the matter can be resolved. Gunman and Mtetwa will appear in court early next month.

What’s that smell? - DJ Cleo ‘flipped his wig’ at scent of his protege

No-nonsense producer DJ Cleo has fired his recalcitrant protegé Mavo for stealing his luxury perfume. News of Mavo’s dismissal from DJ Cleo’s Will of Steel Productions company came to light after it was announced on the SABC1 music show Live last Friday that Mavo had joined Chicco Twala’s stable. It is alleged that Mavo sneaked into Cleo’s bathroom in his Welgehuewel house west of Jozi, bathed and helped himself to his luxury perfume. It is believed that on smelling his perfume on the muso, Cleo flipped his wig and confronted him about it. Mavo rattled Cleo’s cage when he crocheted a story that he wore the perfume to ward off the pong he had on him after picking up bricks scattered in the yard of the wizard vinyl spinner. “This angered DJ Cleo because at that time there were no bricks in his yard and apart from that, Mavo had no right to sneak into Cleo's bedroom and help himself to his stuff. “DJ Cleo has a wife and children. What if Mavo had found Cleo’s wife bathing in the buff?” asks a source. Cleo will not deny or confirm the perfume incident. “No comment on that one,” he said when quizzed by Sunday World. But the award-winning producer confirms – refering to a story published in our newspaper about his dog being raped – that he fired Mavo for, among other things, spreading lies about his company. “The aim is not to discredit him, but Will of Steel Productions is a reputable company. We have a code of conduct which he violated,” Cleo says. Mavo confirms that he had a tiff with Cleo over the perfume. “I was sweating after picking up the bricks which were scattered in his yard. “I then went to his bathroom, bathed and used his perfume. He then got angry. But that was not the only reason we drifted apart. He had problems with my work ethics and fired me,” says Mavo.

The wedding cost a cool R200 000 with the wedding dress and evening gown totalling R20 000! The Stars of Mzansi award-winning Durban vinyl- spinner DJ Tira, real name aka Mthokozisi Khathi, and his gorgeous bride had a celebritydom of famous guests too including DJ Fresh, L’vovo, Oskido and DJ Bongz amongst the 130 witnesses at the Izulu Hotel in Ballito, on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast.Afro Souls, the new Afro-pop groups signed by the couple’s entertainment company – Afrotainment – made sure everyone danced well into the night. The celebrity couple are currently honeymooning in the beautiful Bahamas and have confirmed to Sunday World that there are no plans, for at least the next year, to produce baby TiraLales.

Durban - The finalists of the Telkom Knockout Cup will get an early dress rehearsal on Wednesday when Kaizer Chiefs host Mamelodi Sundowns in a Premier Soccer League match at King's Park in Durban.
Both teams won their respective Telkom semi-finals on the weekend to set up the final the sponsors would have dreamt of between Sundowns, the richest and strongest line-up in the country, and giants Chiefs, the best-supported.
Not that Wednesday's PSL game will not be any less competitive than the Cup final. Sundowns, in fourth place, are well-poised to begin their Championship push. Chiefs will be mildly concerned at their mediocre start in the PSL race, and need a victory to buck up their 11th position.
Then there is also the psychological advantage to be gained going into the Cup final.
Of the two sides in the Telkom semis this past weekend, Chiefs were the slightly more convincing in their 1-0 victory over tough Bloemfontein Celtic. Like Chiefs, Sundowns were made to struggle against Free State Stars to run out 2-1 winners.
